Αν και σήμερα είναι Χριστιανική εορτή, καλό είναι να θυμηθούμε τις ρίζες του ονόματός μας:
H Δήμητρα είναι μια από τις μεγαλύτερες και παλαιότερες θεές του αρχαίου ελληνικού πανθέου. Κόρη του Κρόνου και της Ρέας, αδερφή του Δία, του Ποσειδώνα, του Πλούτωνα, της Ήρας και της Εστίας. Θεά της γονιμότητας και της βλάστησης του εδάφους, προστάτιδα της γης και των προϊόντων της, μάνα των δημητριακών και κυρίως των σιτηρών.
Το όνομα Δήμητρα σημαίνει “Αυτή που έχει δύο μήτρες” - ο συμβολισμός της γονιμότητας.
Τα Δημητριακά πήραν το όνομα τους απο εκείνη, και όχι το αντίθετο, όπως λανθασμένα αναφέρει η άνωθεν σελίδα.
